The D-Day invasion was the culmination of an incredible amount of planning and strategy, and it marked the beginning of the end of Axis supremacy in Europe. On the first three days, this massive invasion landed 745 ships in France supported by 4,066 landing craft carrying 185,000 men, 20,000 vehicles. The air assault was comprised of 18,000 paratroopers from 1,087 aircraft.
Within a month, 1,100,000 troops, 200,000 vehicles, and 750,000 tons of stores landed in France .
While the war in Europe was contested for nearly another year after the landings in Normandy, D-Day remains perhaps the most memorable moment of WWII for many Americans. The bravery shown by the 156,000 young men from the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom, who landed on the first day, is indelibly written in our minds as we recall the mortal danger they engaged with head-on.
