House Bill 370 “No Veteran Left Behind Act” appropriates funds to The Independence Fund, Inc., to establish and implement a pilot program to expand the Veterans Justice Intervention program by working with law enforcement departments in several counties.
The Independence Fund, Inc. is a nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the lives of veterans and their families. Their mission statement is as follows. “Founded in 2007, The Independence Fund is committed to empowering our nation’s catastrophically wounded, injured, or ill Veterans to overcome physical, mental, and emotional wounds incurred in the line of duty. We are dedicated to improving the lives of both our Veterans and their families. Through our Mobility, Caregiver, Adaptive Sports, Advocacy, and Family programs, The Independence Fund strives to bridge the gap of unmet needs for Veterans and their caregivers.”
The Veterans Intervention program helps justice-involved veterans who suffer from unique mental health and substance abuse issues avoid unnecessary extended incarceration by ensuring that eligible veterans have timely access to veterans’ services.
“We must support veterans struggling with mental illness and other disabilities. The wounds they receive during their terms of duty, visible and invisible, should be of the highest concern to our society.” Said Representative Hall.
